ST. MICHAELS — Sunny skies, steamed crabs and featured guests brought an estimated 2,500 people through the gates of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum Sunday to celebrate Talbot County Watermen’s Association Watermen’s Appreciation Day.

This year’s event featured deck boss Edgar Hansen and deckhand Jake Anderson of the F/V Northwestern, as featured on the Discover Channel’s “Deadliest Catch,” who signed autographs — and at least one dog.

The line for autographs snaked across the museum campus from the start of the event until it ended. Both of the men’s wives sold T-shirts for the men to sign, and Hansen’s wife, Louise, even offered hellos on some festival-goers’ cell phones to people who couldn’t make the event.

In between autographs, the men met festival-goers and rode with boat captains during the boat-docking contest.

“It was good to be back. There is a lot of support in Talbot County for watermen and it shows by the amount of people here today,” Hansen said.

Anderson, who attended the event for the first time with his wife, Jenna, rode on several boats during the watermen’s docking contest.

“The greatest moment was riding with Bennie during the docking contest and trying to drive his boat,” he said. “I really love community events, and this one was awesome.”

Along with the festivities, Talbot County Watermen’s Association President Bunky Chance gave a presentation, awarding cash prices and trophies to winners of the workboat-docking contest.

Del. Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio, R-37B-Talbot, Del. Jay Jacobs, R-36-Kent, and state Sen. Richard Colburn, R-37-Mid-Shore, presented several citations, including one to Turk Cannon, who at the age of 74 continues to work as a watermen in Talbot County.

“This gentlemen has made quite a foundation for us watermen and set high standards,” Chance said. Chance also asked the audience for applause for Garry Tull and Billy Adams, two watermen who have passed recently.

Chance also recognized Lisa Gowe, event coordinator, for her hard work in organizing the event.

“This day met my expectations,” Gowe said. “This is what I was hoping for — to have beautiful weather and to see the museum filled with guests.”

Bay Hundred Seafood provided 204 bushels of steamed crabs and 40 bushels of steamed corn, and Gay Seafood provided 50 bushels.

The day’s fare also include ice cream from the Scottish Highland Creamery, including a special crab and Old Bay sorbet that’s taste delivered as promised.

Event sponsors included Bridges Automotive and Diesel Repair, PNC Bank, Hertrich Ford & Chevrolet, WINX FM, Kastel Bros. Marine Propulsion Specialists and Tow Jamm Marine.

Proceeds from the event benefit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum and the Talbot County Watermen’s Association.
